Earl, this seems like a good place to pose a question I've been wanting to ask you. I seem to remember reading you home-schooled your kids. I've been looking into offering a college prep course, probably in the form of a workshop, for the College Board AP exam in Computer Science. Among others I am thinking it might be appropriate/useful for home-schoolers as it is now based on Java - pretty advanced material for self-study. And College Board tells me my syllabus would need to go under the category of home-schooling for their AP Course Audit. Do you think this is something that would be of interest to home-schoolers/parents and are you aware of any other studies that take this approach, and/or could offer any useful resources for me to look at?

I have not, but I haven't ruled out the possibility. I'm focused on developing the course itself, but of course thinking at the same time about means. I'm not sure working with the government is the most efficient means. I guess I'm thinking more in terms of community.

Mom, the students in N.O. will be heading back to school in 2 weeks, but in the meantime the niece is enrolled in a Summer Program sponsored by the N.O. Public Library...if she reads 10 books by the end of July she and other students in her class will win a prize and tickets to a basketball game...she is reading Rich's book ON THE WINGS OF THE WIND...I don't know how far she is in reading it but she seems to like the book a lot...you can put any book in her hands and she will read it with no complaints...the only problem I have with her is that she likes to eat me out of a house and home...but that's the price I pay for raising a teenager right (LOL)?

Thanks Earl, I will definitely follow your leads. Right now I am developing the syllabus using the resources at http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/publ...

I also received this reply to an inquiry to the College Board:

Dear Steve,

The only option I can suggest to you would be to offer your workshop as a homeschool course. The course would still need to follow College Board curricular requirements for the subject, and would also need to be reviewed via the AP Course Audit. Once authorized, you would be eligible to print transcripts using the AP designation. For more information on participating as a homeschool, please contact us at 877-274-3570.

Thank you,

Sakinah D. Williams-Rowe

Yes they do and I am looking into all the possibilities. Funny, I just got off the phone with Cynthia and we were talking about this. I expect she will stop by, she has experience in this area too and I pointed her over here. All your help is much appreciated.

Earl, the links on Dr. Robinson's page led me to this Online AP CS course offered by Pennsylvania Homeschoolers: http://98.130.222.129/

One good thing I see is of the 2 texts used, one is free available online. I'm taking a close look at this now. The other is hardcopy, but inexpensive. We all know how outrageously expensive textbooks can be, so this is an important consideration.

On the other hand, the online format requires certain facilities, including a broadband connection, which is not guaranteed to be available to lower income students. I am thinking brick and mortar so as to put the burden of equipment, networks on me, not the students and their families.
