Location: Main Campus
Open Date: Jan 20, 2026
Deadline: Sep 01, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
Position Description:

The Massive Data Institute (MDI) and the Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM) seek a postdoctoral fellow to join a project that focuses on using social media data to develop indicators of forced migration. The project is co-led by Sonneborn Chairs Lisa Singh, Ph.D. Department of Computer Science and Public Policy, Katharine Donato, Ph.D., School of Foreign Service and Department of Sociology, and Ali Arab, Ph.D., Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Applicants should have a PhD in any relevant social science disciplines, computer/data science, or other related fields.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a cross-institute collaboration between the Massive Data Institute (MDI), and the Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM). The postdoctoral fellow will be housed at both MDI and ISIM.

We seek a postdoctoral fellow with interests in addressing pressing challenges at the intersection of forced migration and big data, and/or with data analytic skills and experience using large complex data sets, including social media data. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with Professors Singh, Donato, and Arab in analyzing data, writing and publishing research papers, meeting with interested colleagues and students, and mentoring junior scholars.

Research:
Fellows are expected to engage in their own advanced independent and/or directed research with colleagues and engage in projects with the faculty that are part of the Massive Data Institute and ISIM. The Fellow will also look for opportunities to collaborate with faculty and practitioners in other parts of Georgetown and is expected to give at least one seminar presentation based on his/her work while a fellow. In addition, the Postdoctoral fellow will assist the Professors by helping build a community across campus and helping supervise students working at this intersection.

Teaching:
Fellows will teach a tutorial about big data and forced migration use each semester, and based on their work during the fellowship. In addition, the fellow will contribute to the intellectual life of the Massive Data Institute and ISIM.

Fellowships are a temporary advanced scholarly appointment for a 12-month appointment to begin in the Spring 2026 semester. The candidate will have a temporary advanced scholarly appointment beginning May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, with the possibility of renewal if funding permits. The person hired in this position will receive a stipend of $70,000, a travel allowance, and health insurance coverage. The Postdoctoral fellow will be provided working space.

The Massive Data Institute is an interdisciplinary center focusing on key public policy and analytic issues involving high-dimensional data. It is the expectation that the postdoctoral fellows will assist in building relationships across disciplines and departments within the University. Further, MDI has budding partnerships with numerous external agencies and the fellows will be involved in conversations and interactions with potential partners.

Application Materials:

To apply, submit the following items on Interfolio. The deadline for first review of applications is February 28, 2026. After that date, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed, rolling basis.
  • Cover Letter
  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Illustrative publication(s) (optional)
